Manchester City Step Up Pursuit of Dortmund Wonderkid Mathis Albert as German Giants Fight to Keep Teen Star

Manchester City are reportedly intensifying their efforts to sign 17-year-old American winger Mathis Albert, but Borussia Dortmund are determined to protect one of their most exciting prospects from the growing interest of Europe’s elite.

Manchester City are positioning themselves for a potential move for Borussia Dortmund youngster Mathis Albert, with the Premier League club reportedly emerging as the leading contender in the race for the highly rated American.

The 17-year-old has attracted attention after making an impressive breakthrough in Germany and establishing himself as one of the most promising young attacking talents in European football. However, his limited first-team opportunities this season have raised questions about his long-term future at Signal Iduna Park.

City step up their interest

According to reports, Manchester City have been monitoring Albert for some time and made a formal approach to Dortmund during the summer transfer window.

The English champions were reportedly prepared to consider a package worth between €15 million and €20 million. More recent reports suggest City remain determined to pursue the winger and could offer attractive personal terms to convince him to move to England.

Chelsea have also maintained an interest, while Paris Saint-Germain previously made enquiries. Arsenal and Liverpool have reportedly joined the wider group of clubs monitoring his development.

Despite the competition, City are currently being described by some reports as the frontrunners. However, no completed agreement has been announced, and the transfer remains at the rumour and negotiation stage.

Why Mathis Albert has attracted Europe's attention

Albert joined Borussia Dortmund from the LA Galaxy academy in 2024 and has progressed rapidly through the German club's development system.

Born in South Carolina, the winger made history in April 2026 when he became the youngest American to appear in the Bundesliga, surpassing the previous record held by Giovanni Reyna.

His rise continued on the international stage. After making his senior United States debut, Albert scored against Chile in September 2026, briefly becoming the youngest goalscorer in USMNT history before that record was surpassed by Cavan Sullivan.

Predominantly a left winger, Albert is known for his acceleration, confidence in one-on-one situations and ability to cut inside onto his stronger right foot. Those qualities help explain why several major European clubs are tracking his progress.

Dortmund refuse to give up their young star

Borussia Dortmund are not prepared to let their highly rated prospect leave without a fight.

The German club have reportedly rejected approaches, including loan enquiries, and are working towards a contract extension. His current deal runs until June 2027, making the coming months particularly important for Dortmund.

Head coach Niko Kovač has also publicly backed the teenager, indicating that he expects Albert to receive considerably more playing time as the season progresses.

That promise could prove crucial. At 17, Albert needs regular opportunities to continue his development, and Dortmund will have to demonstrate that a clear pathway into the first team exists.

A transfer that may have to wait

Manchester City's pursuit faces an additional obstacle: Premier League regulations prevent English clubs from signing Albert permanently before he turns 18 in May 2027.

That means any potential move would need to be planned around his birthday and the relevant transfer-window rules.

For now, Dortmund remain focused on securing his future, while City and their rivals continue to monitor the situation.

One thing is clear: Mathis Albert's next career decision could become one of the most closely watched youth-transfer stories of 2027.
